GRANTS PROGRAM

The North Kitsap Schools Foundation awards grants directly to educators (including teachers, principals, librarians and other certificated personnel) across all schools and grade levels in the North Kitsap School District.
Grants are awarded to specific individuals or programs for innovative and exciting learning opportunities that enhance the education of North Kitsap students. The NKSF Board of Trustees review all grant applications shortly after the beginning of the school year and select requested proposals for funding. The number of grants awarded varies from year to year, guided by NKSF grant funding policy. Previous awards can be found on our Grants In Action page.
GRANT APPLICATIONS
Funding Areas
NKSF accepts grant applications for the following areas of emphasis:
-
Programs and/or materials that deepen and enrich student learning experiences in all subjects
-
Innovative STEM/CTE/STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) programs and/or equipment
-
Field trips to extend learning beyond the classroom
-
Physical Education programs that enhance motor skills, and teach collaboration and fair-play
-
Innovative programs and/or equipment that provide direct support to students who are underperforming and/or require special needs
-
All applications should enhance and support the North Kitsap School District core curriculum and strategic goals. NKSF will defer to the North Kitsap School District Grant Review Committee’s judgement with respect to curriculum based decisions.
Co-Applicants
Grant applications may be submitted jointly to include additional teachers and classrooms, and/or district schools in the funding request. All co-applicant names must be listed on the grant application.
GRANT AWARD POLICY
The maximum award per year is $5,000 per grant. Grant applications submitted jointly with co-applicants can request an amount greater than $5,000 and will be considered.
Partial grants may be awarded based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, NKSD recommendations, budget considerations, previous grant applications and/or awards.
The following requests will not be funded:
-
Travel and/or lodging expenses outside of NKSD Transportation
-
In cases where NKSD Transportation cannot fulfill a transportation request, funding for non-district transportation will be considered at the NKSD Transportation rate
-
-
Payroll related expenses, including substitutes, NKSD teachers or staff
-
Any requests that fail to meet with NKSD curriculum requirements
-
NKSF will defer to the North Kitsap School District Grant Review Committee’s judgement with respect to curriculum based decisions
-
-
Sports programs or events.
All grant monies are to be used by the end of the school year in which they are awarded. Partial grant award funds and/or any remaining funds from a grant award cannot be repurposed for any reason.
Relocating Items Purchased With Grant Award Funds
All non-consumable items purchased with NKSF grant award funds belong to the North Kitsap School District, and specifically to the building coded in the original purchase by the NKSD business accounting office. Items should not be removed from the buildings or classrooms to which they were originally coded. Special considerations may be given in the case where building management (i.e. the school’s principals) for both locations agree that the transfer of the items is warranted.
GRANT IMPACT REPORTS
Grant recipients are required to complete an NKSF Grant Impact Report detailing results of the grant-funded program no later than June 1st of the school year in which the award was given. An impact report may be submitted by either the primary applicant on the original grant application, or any co-applicant so long as the primary applicant is properly identified in the report.
In cases where a grant was awarded, but the materials or services purchased with the grant funds will not arrive until after June 1st, an NKSF Impact Report Extension is required in lieu of a full impact report. An extension allows for the submission of a full impact report no later than June 1st of the following school year, once enough time has passed to effectively evaluate the funding impact.
Failure to complete a Grant Impact Report or Grant Report Extension will affect eligibility for future awards. The Grant Impact Report may be shared with donors, in-person, at community events, via social media, the NKSF website, and/or email to illustrate the impact of the donor contribution.
In addition, although not required, NKSF requests grant recipients also make best efforts to:
-
Collect and submit pictures, videos and other artifacts related to the grant’s implementation for display at community events, on social media, the NKSF website, and/or email.
-
Publicize use of the grant and provide evidence of how the grant-funded program was promoted to the community.

GRANT APPLICATION PROCESS
Grant applications submitted during an NKSF grants cycle go through several steps. See below for the current grant cycle dates.
Grant applicants are asked to be patient throughout the process, and will be notified as soon as review and approval procedures are complete.
Phase I
Application Submissions
This is the due date by which applications must be submitted for review. School principals must have signed off on the grant application prior to this submission due date. Grant applications submitted after the indicated deadline will not be considered.
Phase II
District Review
The time between the application submission deadline and this date is allocated so that the NKSD Grant Review Committee has an opportunity to review all applications for suitability with curriculum, synergy with existing technology systems, and ask any clarifying questions of applicants.
Phase III
Foundation Review
Once the district Grant Review Committee has reviewed and noted their recommendations for each grant application, the NKSF Board of Trustees review the applications for approval under the foundation’s award requirements.
Phase IV
District Accounting
All approved grant award amounts are submitted to the NKSD Finance & Accounting Office so that the funds can be allocated under district finance codes that allow school principals and office managers to make purchases. Due to the number of grant awards, and variety of purchases, this period can take a couple of weeks.
Phase V
Awards Announced
Once NKSF is notified that the accounting codes have been established for all of the grant awards, an email notification to the primary applicant will be sent out. Grant award letters and certificates will be delivered before the end of the school year, but the funds will be available for use immediately upon notification of the award.
