Grants in Action: Supporting Growth Beyond the Lesson

Sometimes the right tool doesn’t just support learning—it opens a door.

At Hilder Pearson Elementary, an NKSF grant provided sensory tools and hands-on STEM materials for students in the ISP Special Education program. Designed to support small-group STEM and social-emotional learning (SEL) activities, these resources are helping students in grades 1–5 stay calm, focused, and ready to learn.
For many students, traditional learning environments can feel overwhelming. Sensory tools help regulate emotions and reduce stress. Hands-on STEM projects create engagement and curiosity. Together, they provide a powerful combination, supporting both academic growth and emotional development in ways that feel natural and empowering.

A Breakthrough Moment
One of the most meaningful moments this year involved a student who often struggled to stay focused and manage behavior in class. Participation was difficult, and staying engaged required constant support.
Then came two STEM projects funded by this grant.
As he worked, everything shifted. He became calm. Focused. Fully engaged. While building and problem-solving, he began to open up about challenges that typically led to frustration. Because he was regulated and interested, his teacher was able to guide him through strategies for handling those emotions, without it feeling like a formal lesson.
Since then, he has begun using those strategies in his high-volume general education classroom. Other teachers have noticed the growth.
It wasn’t just a project. It was a doorway to connection, confidence, and new skills.
Beyond the Classroom
The sensory and STEM materials have reduced behaviors, increased engagement, and created more hands-on learning opportunities for students who benefit from structured support. While space and scheduling challenges limited full implementation this year, plans are in place to expand the program next school year.
Most importantly, this grant ensures that students in specialized programs have access to enriching STEM and project-based learning experiences that build curiosity, resilience, and problem-solving skills alongside social-emotional growth.
When students feel regulated and supported, they can access their potential.
