Grants in Action: Twenty Yards from Shore

Sometimes bravery isn’t the whole ocean. Sometimes it’s just twenty yards.

Once, a boy stood at the water’s edge, terrified to get in a kayak.

A chaperone offered to paddle out with him. It took a lot of encouragement, and even then he only wanted to go about twenty yards from shore. But he went. And when he came back, he was all smiles, proud of himself for facing something that had felt so scary.

That’s what a North Kitsap Schools Foundation grant made possible for the fifth graders at Vinland Elementary: a trip to Sound View Camp, and a hundred small, brave moments just like it.

The grant gave all 101 fifth graders access to outdoor education, team-building, leadership, and the kind of hands-on learning that simply can’t happen at a desk. Students grew socially and emotionally through activities that asked them to work together, solve problems, and rely on one another. Many built new friendships. Many stepped outside their comfort zones. And they came back to school with more confidence and stronger connections to their classmates than when they left.

Time spent in nature, away from the usual routine, changes how kids see themselves and each other. A student who was quiet in class, cheering a friend across the ropes course. A kid who kept to himself might come home with a whole new group of friends. The lessons weren’t on a whiteboard. They were in the trees, on the water, and around the camp at night.

It takes a lot of people to make a trip like this work. The camp staff and chaperones created a space that was safe, supportive, and genuinely fun, so that every student had room to try something hard and know they’d be caught if they wobbled.

Which brings us back to that kayak. Twenty yards isn’t far, unless you’re the one who was too scared to go at all. Then it’s everything. That boy learned something he’ll carry long after the memory of the trip fades: that he can do the thing that frightens him. That’s not a lesson you forget.

For 101 students, this trip became a set of memories and small victories they’ll hold onto for years.

And that’s the heart of it. A community invested in giving its kids an experience big enough to grow into, a few days away that sent them home braver, closer, and more sure of themselves. A scared kid paddled twenty yards and came back proud. That is what support looks like up close.

This is Grants in Action: Giving Students the Room to Grow Braver, Closer, and More Sure of Who They Are.
