Grants in Action: NKHS Art Takes Flight on Tiny Metal Wings

New Tools And Equipment Open Doors To Creativity Through Fine Metal Working

During the 2023-2024 school year, Justin Johnson placed a request through NKSF to purchase some fine metal working and jewelry craftsmanship tools for the North Kitsap High School art students.

A student uses a handheld tool on a small metal piece at a workbench with a green cutting mat, wearing safety goggles.

The grant supplied the art room with tools and machinery that allowed the students to take their work from 3D design studies and build real-world items based on their designs. The ability to create art from found materials, provided one student with an exceptional piece, as Justin explained:

“An advanced student was able to use raw materials she collected from local beaches to craft an intricate dragonfly design featuring mixed materials and a stone setting. Processing the raw material would not have been possible without the grant-purchased equipment.“

This purchase will continue to provide the students with access to the tools for many years to come, allowing them to use their creativity in design and recognize the usefulness of objects leading to greater resourcefulness.
